New Life Community Church was birthed from Pastor Darnell C. Hammock's deep concern for Oakland's high homicide rates, which stirred his spirit while serving at Pearly Grove Baptist Church in Fresno, CA. Inspired by Nehemiah's story of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, Pastor Hammock felt called to return to Oakland to rebuild the walls of love, justice, equality, and hope.

Baptists pressed harder than anyone for religious liberty in America, and the freedom every other congregation on this map enjoys is partly what they won. They have carried believers' baptism and the priesthood of every believer to more of the world than almost anyone — and the Black Baptist church has repeatedly been the conscience of the whole nation.
