The Baptists of the North — heirs of the 1814 missionary movement that the Southern Baptist Convention departed from, and one of the most racially diverse denominations in the country by its own long practice.
Heritage
The continuing body of the original national Baptist organization: the Triennial Convention, formed in 1814 to support Adoniram and Ann Judson's mission to Burma. When southern churches withdrew in 1845 over slavery, the northern societies carried on, organized as the Northern Baptist Convention in 1907, renamed American Baptist Convention in 1950 and American Baptist Churches USA in 1972. After the Civil War its American Baptist Home Mission Society helped found and sustain Black colleges including Morehouse, Spelman, Shaw, and Virginia Union — a legacy that still marks the body. RCMS 2020 counts 4,790 congregations, with offices in Pennsylvania.
Theological family
Broadly evangelical to moderate mainline, holding both in one body: believers' baptism by immersion, the authority of Scripture, and the historic Baptist freedoms, with congregations ranging from evangelical to progressive. ABCUSA has long described itself as among the most racially and ethnically diverse Protestant denominations, with no single racial majority among its members.
Who decides what
Congregational, organized upward into regions and a biennial national gathering; national boards serve missions, publication, and ministries. No level above the congregation can bind it — a fact tested repeatedly in the body's disputes and always reaffirmed.
What a first-time visitor would find
Sunday varies by congregation more than in most denominations: a New England first-church sanctuary, a Black Baptist congregation in full voice, a Burmese-language fellowship, and a contemporary evangelical service may all be ABCUSA. Common threads are believers' baptism, the Lord's Supper as memorial, and preaching at the center.
What it has always cared about
World missions since Judson; soul freedom and the un-coerced conscience; the education of freedpeople and the colleges that grew from it; welcoming immigrant church communities — Swedish and German Baptist conferences once incubated inside it, and Burmese, Karen, and Chin congregations flourish in it now.
Its gift to the wider church
A working proof that a Baptist body can hold evangelical conviction, mainline breadth, and real racial diversity in one fellowship for two centuries — plus the missionary movement itself, which American Protestantism largely learned from the Judsons' sending.
Commonly confused with
With the Southern Baptist Convention — the 1845 division is the historical line between them; ABCUSA is the northern continuation. Also with the American Baptist Association, an unrelated Landmark body in Texarkana, and with the several National Baptist conventions, historically Black bodies with their own records here.
Range of views inside it
Wide by design: congregations differ on women in ministry (many ABCUSA churches are pastored by women), sexuality, worship style, and theology, and regions differ in culture. The body has repeatedly chosen to live with the range rather than divide over it, though departures have happened at the edges.

- 1814 — Baptists organize for world missions
When missionaries Adoniram and Ann Judson became Baptists on the voyage to Burma, Baptists across the country organized the Triennial Convention in Philadelphia in 1814 — the first national Baptist body in America — to stand behind them. Luther Rice spent the rest of his life riding between churches, raising support.
It took a missionary on the far side of the world to make fiercely independent Baptist congregations act as one body.
- 1845 — The Southern Baptist Convention forms
When the national Baptist mission boards declined to appoint slaveholders as missionaries, southern churches withdrew and founded the Southern Baptist Convention at Augusta, Georgia in May 1845. In 1995, on its 150th anniversary, the SBC formally repented of its origin, resolving that it had defended slavery and asking forgiveness of African Americans.
It took 150 years, but the convention said the words out loud: we were wrong. Repentance that specific is rare in institutional history, and it belongs in this story as much as the split does.
