Amana Church Society

The church of the Amana Colonies: German radical Pietists who followed inspired testimony to Iowa, held all things in common for eighty years, and still worship in plain rooms with unaccompanied hymns.
Heritage
The Community of True Inspiration formed in Germany in 1714 around Eberhard Ludwig Gruber and Johann Friedrich Rock, holding that God still speaks through inspired instruments — Werkzeuge. Under Christian Metz the community emigrated in the 1840s to Ebenezer, New York, then from 1855 built the seven Amana villages in Iowa, living communally until the Great Change of 1932 separated the church from the business corporation (whose appliance brand later made the Amana name famous far beyond the church). The Amana Church Society continues the worship and eldership of the Inspirationists.

Radical Pietist: the living God who still addresses his people, humility, self-examination, and peace, with the Bible and the preserved testimonies of the Werkzeuge read in worship.
Who decides what
Elders, serving without salary, lead worship and govern the church, continuing the community's historic pattern.
What a first-time visitor would find
A visitor finds plain meeting rooms, unaccompanied German and English hymns from the community's own hymn tradition, Scripture, testimonies read from the inspired record, and prayer — worship deliberately unadorned and quiet.
What it has always cared about
Humility as an aesthetic and an ethic; the community's memory kept faithfully; and plainness held gently rather than enforced.
Its gift to the wider church
A preserved voice of radical Pietism — almost nowhere else can the wider church still hear the communal, quietist stream of the Pietist awakening worshiping in its own words.
Commonly confused with
With the Amish constantly, by verbal accident — Amana is a separate people, tradition, and history; and with the appliance brand, which descends from the colonies' corporation, not the church.
