Heritage
Bulgarian immigrants — many from contested Macedonian regions — settled American industrial towns in the first decade of the twentieth century, organizing the first Bulgarian Orthodox parish in Granite City, Illinois in 1907. A diocese took shape in the late 1930s and, after Cold War strains familiar to every Eastern European diaspora, stands today as a diocese of the Bulgarian Patriarchate of Sofia. Immigration since 1989 has renewed many parishes. RCMS 2020 counts 24 parishes.

Chalcedonian Eastern Orthodox; heir to the medieval Bulgarian church whose schools raised the Slavonic alphabet of Cyril and Methodius into a liturgical language for half of Europe.
