Church of South India congregations in the US

Church of South India congregations in the US belongs to the Anglican and Episcopal family of churches.

Governance: episcopal.

A 1947 union of Anglican, Reformed, Congregational and Methodist churches; a member of the Anglican Communion.

Congregations in America of the 1947 Indian union that fused Anglican, Methodist, Reformed and Congregational churches into one body — an ecumenical landmark now serving the Indian diaspora.

Heritage

The Church of South India was inaugurated at Madras in September 1947, weeks after Indian independence — the first union anywhere to bring episcopal and non-episcopal churches (Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian/Reformed and Congregationalist) into one church with bishops. It is a member of the Anglican Communion while retaining its united character. As South Indian Christians emigrated, CSI congregations formed across American cities, worshiping in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and English, often in borrowed or shared buildings, under the care of CSI structures for the diaspora.

Theological family

A united church's breadth: the creeds, the two sacraments, and episcopal order accepted as a gift for unity rather than a party badge — carrying Anglican liturgy, Methodist warmth and Reformed conviction in one body.

Who decides what

Episcopal and synodical in India; in America, congregations relate to diaspora councils and visiting or appointed CSI clergy while managing much of their own life.

What a first-time visitor would find

A liturgy recognizably Anglican in shape, sung with South Indian hymnody in the congregation's mother tongue; communion, strong congregational singing, and a community meal are common.

What it has always cared about

Church union as obedience rather than experiment; worship in the languages of home; holding a scattered diaspora together across a continent.

Its gift to the wider church

The CSI is world Christianity's standing proof that divided Protestant families can actually reunite — the union every twentieth-century ecumenist cited — and its American congregations carry that story into US cities.

Commonly confused with

With Indian Orthodox and Mar Thoma congregations, older Saint Thomas Christian bodies with different histories (the Mar Thoma church is itself in communion with Anglicans but is not CSI); and with the Church of North India, the parallel 1970 union.

Range of views inside it

Congregations vary by language, region of origin, and how fully Prayer Book or free their worship runs.

A note from the mapmakers: Nothing here may be asserted of a specific congregation. No US congregation count for CSI congregations is published in RCMS 2020, so this record carries none. Sentences drawn from this record hedge as "CSI congregations in the US typically…" and yield to the congregation's own materials.
