The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church — sharing the ancient Tewahedo inheritance of the Horn of Africa, autocephalous only since the 1990s, its American parishes largely built by refugees.

Heritage

Eritrean Christianity shares the Aksumite root — the fourth-century conversion, the Ge'ez liturgy, the tabot — with Ethiopia, of whose church it was part until Eritrean independence. Autocephaly came in the 1990s with the blessing of the Coptic Pope of Alexandria, making this the youngest Oriental Orthodox church. Its American parishes were planted largely by refugees from Eritrea's wars and its indefinite national-service conscription; RCMS 2020 counts 64 congregations. The church at home has suffered heavy state interference — Patriarch Abune Antonios was held under house arrest from 2006 until his death in 2022, a grief its diaspora carries openly.

Theological family

Oriental Orthodox of the Tewahedo tradition, identical in faith to its Ethiopian sister; "Tewahedo" — "made one" — is the shared one-word confession of Christ's united divine-human nature.

Who decides what

Hierarchical under its own patriarch in Asmara with diaspora dioceses; the patriarchate's subjection to state power has split loyalties abroad, with some parishes aligned to hierarchs in exile.

With the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church — liturgy and vesture are nearly identical; the distinction is national and jurisdictional, recent, and sensitive on both sides.
