Heritage

Evangelical Friends Church International gathers the yearly meetings of the Friends movement's evangelical wing — heirs of the nineteenth-century Gurneyite and revivalist stream that embraced pastors, planned services, and evangelism. Organized as the Evangelical Friends Alliance in 1965 and internationalized in 1989, its American regions include the Eastern Region (Ohio), Mid-America, Northwest, Southwest, and Alaska, with George Fox University and Barclay College among its schools. RCMS 2020 counted 235 congregations.

Theological family

Evangelical: the authority of Scripture, salvation through Christ, and the Spirit's direct work — the historic Friends testimony of Christ's living presence, read through an evangelical confession. Like all Friends, they observe baptism and communion inwardly rather than with water, bread, and cup.

Who decides what

Congregational-connectional in the Friends pattern: local churches within yearly meetings (regions), which set standards and credential pastors; EFCI is their common fellowship, not a headquarters.

What a first-time visitor would find

Programmed worship: a visitor finds singing, Scripture, pastoral prayer, and a sermon — recognizably evangelical — often with a held period of open silence in which anyone may speak as led. Most congregations simply feel like warm evangelical churches with a Quaker accent.

What it has always cared about

Missions — Evangelical Friends carried the Quaker faith to Alaska, Central America, Asia, and Africa; Christian education; and the conviction that the inward light is Christ himself, not a vague glow.

Its gift to the wider church

The demonstration that Quakerism and evangelism belong together: Evangelical Friends turned a famously quiet tradition outward, and most of the world's Friends today worship in the programmed, mission-planted pattern this branch built.

Commonly confused with

With unprogrammed Friends (Friends General Conference and independent meetings), whose silent worship differs completely in form; with Friends United Meeting, a broader association overlapping in heritage; and with the assumption that all Quakers are theologically liberal — this branch is not.

Range of views inside it

Regions and congregations vary in how much silence and Friends vocabulary they keep, and in worship style from traditional to contemporary; the evangelical confession is the constant.
