Heritage

The Evangelical Methodist Church was organized in Memphis in 1946 under the leadership of J. H. Hamblen, gathering Methodists who believed the newly formed Methodist Church was drifting theologically liberal and too centralized. The founders kept Wesleyan doctrine and revivalist practice while rejecting what they saw as the machinery that had carried modernism: congregations in the EMC hold their own property and call their own pastors within a cooperative connection. Over the following decades it received several smaller like-minded bodies, and its headquarters today is in Indianapolis.

Theological family

Conservative Wesleyan-Arminian: biblical inerrancy in the fundamentalist-leaning key of its founding era, the new birth, and holiness of life, all on the historic Methodist doctrinal base.

Who decides what

A hybrid its founders chose on purpose: congregational in property and pastoral call, connexional in fellowship and oversight, with district and general conference structures that serve rather than rule the local church.

What a first-time visitor would find

Warm evangelical worship — hymns and gospel songs, increasingly blended styles, prayer, and preaching that aims at conversion and consecration; a visitor will find it closer to an evangelical community church than to formal liturgy.

What it has always cared about

Doctrinal watchfulness as an act of love for Methodism; evangelism and missions; and the conviction, held since 1946, that the local congregation is the safest home for both.

Its gift to the wider church

A preserved strand of mid-century conservative Methodism that neither disappeared into independency nor hardened into isolation — evidence that the revivalist Methodist mainstream of an earlier generation still has a denominational address.

Commonly confused with

With the Congregational Methodist Church (similar polity, a century older), the Southern Methodist Church (similar era and temper, different origin), and the Free Methodists (an older holiness body); the name is also easily mistaken for a generic descriptor.

Range of views inside it

Congregations vary in worship style and in emphasis between evangelistic and holiness accents; the connection is small and doctrinally uniform.
