The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God) was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1977 by Edir Macedo, a former lottery-agency worker turned evangelist, and grew into one of the largest and most visible neo-Pentecostal bodies in the world, famous for converting theaters and supermarkets into temples and for the monumental Temple of Solomon in São Paulo, opened 2014. In the US it operates as the Universal Church, with temples in many cities offering services every day, organized around weekly themes of need — health, family, finances, deliverance.
