Heritage
The Laestadian Lutheran Church organized in 1973 as the Association of American Laestadian Congregations and took its present name in 1994. It is the American body of the Conservative Laestadian branch of the revival begun by Lars Levi Laestadius in 1840s Swedish Lapland, and it remains in close fellowship with its large Finnish counterpart, the SRK. Its congregations, counted at 29 in RCMS 2020, cluster in Minnesota — where its offices sit at Loretto — and in Michigan, with others scattered where Finnish-American communities settled.
Theological family
Lutheran in doctrine — Scripture and the Lutheran confessions — within the Conservative Laestadian understanding that living faith is found in God's congregation, and that the gospel is concretely proclaimed in the absolution: sins forgiven in Jesus' name and precious blood.
Who decides what
Congregational: local congregations govern themselves and are served by mostly lay preachers; the national organization coordinates publications, summer services and mission work in fellowship with the SRK in Finland.
What a first-time visitor would find
Plain services built around preaching and the spoken forgiveness of sins, with Zion's Songs and Hymns sung unaccompanied or simply; the massive annual Summer Services gather thousands. Family life is visibly central — congregations are typically thick with children.
What it has always cared about
The proclaimed absolution; the congregation of God as the home of living faith; large families welcomed as God's gift; personal simplicity and separation from worldly entertainments; and the bond with the Finnish revival's mother communities.
Its gift to the wider church
An unembarrassed witness that the forgiveness of sins is something Christians may actually say to one another — and a demonstration, rare in modern America, of a whole community ordering its life around children, hospitality, and the congregation.
Commonly confused with
With the Apostolic Lutheran Church of America constantly — a separate and larger body of the same Finnish revival, from a different branch; the streams do not share fellowship, and insiders hold the distinction firmly. Outsiders also mistake Laestadians generally for Amish-like separatists, which misreads a revival movement inside Lutheranism.

A doctrinally uniform fellowship; variation shows mainly in locale and in degree of Finnish heritage, not in teaching.
