Heritage

The local churches arose in China in the 1920s and 1930s through the ministry of Watchman Nee, who taught that Scripture knows one church in each city; Witness Lee carried the work to Taiwan in 1949 and then to the United States, settling in Anaheim, California in 1962, where Living Stream Ministry publishes the ministry of both men, including the Recovery Version of the Bible. Watchman Nee remained in China and died in prison in 1972 after two decades of confinement for his faith.

Theological family

Evangelical in confession — the Bible as complete divine revelation, the Trinity, Christ's deity, humanity, death and resurrection, salvation by grace through faith — joined to the distinctive teachings of Nee and Lee: the church as Christ's organic Body expressed locally as one church per city, the believers' experience of Christ as life, and the church's history read as a recovery of lost truth. After years of controversy, a lengthy evaluation published in the 2000s by evangelical researchers who had earlier criticized the movement concluded its teaching is within historic Christian orthodoxy — a reversal the churches themselves cite.

Who decides what

The churches refuse denominational structure on principle, and this record honors the refusal: each city's church is administratively independent under local elders, with Living Stream Ministry serving as publisher and the co-workers giving ministry, not government.

What a first-time visitor would find

Meetings are participatory to a degree that surprises visitors: congregational singing, and much of the meeting given to members standing to pray, testify or declare verses — the practice of calling on the name of the Lord and pray-reading Scripture aloud is distinctive; the Lord's table is weekly.

What it has always cared about

The experience of Christ as life rather than religion as form; every member functioning; the recovery of church practice from Scripture; and endurance under persecution — the movement's Chinese mother churches knew it severely, and Nee's imprisonment is part of the family memory.

Its gift to the wider church

Watchman Nee's writings — The Normal Christian Life above all — became devotional classics across the whole evangelical world, read by millions who have never met a local church; few twentieth-century Chinese Christians shaped global Christianity more.

Commonly confused with

With the Plymouth Brethren, whose assemblies shaped Nee and whose family this taxonomy files them near — related in practice, distinct in history and teaching; with the Church of Christ traditions, unrelated; and the phrase local church, used generically by every tradition, makes name-matching treacherous.

Range of views inside it

The churches understand themselves as one practice, and variation is limited by design; differences show mainly in language (many US congregations are bilingual Chinese-English) and campus setting.
