CONTESTED PLACEMENT: East Syriac in rite and succession, Reformed in theology since the nineteenth century, and in communion with the Anglican churches. Some sources file it with Oriental Orthodox, others as a Reformed Oriental church of its own. SOURCE (added 0256): the World Council of Churches resolves this by giving the Mar Thoma Church a church family OF ITS OWN — neither Eastern nor Oriental Orthodox — among its 20 families. Heritage

The Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar shares the St. Thomas Christians' ancient Kerala inheritance, but took its own path when Abraham Malpan, a seminary teacher influenced by Anglican missionaries, began reforming liturgy and doctrine from about 1836 — removing invocation of saints and prayers for the dead while keeping the West Syriac liturgy, the episcopate and the Syriac titles. The result is genuinely unusual: an Eastern church holding the Reformation's convictions. It entered a concordat with Anglicans in 1961 and has been in full communion with the churches of the Anglican Communion since 1974 without becoming Anglican itself; the World Council of Churches lists it as a church family of its own. Its US diocese serves the Indian diaspora; RCMS 2020 counts 49 congregations, listed as the Malankara Mar Thoma Church.
