Heritage
The Melkites descend from the ancient patriarchate of Antioch; in 1724 a disputed patriarchal election divided Antioch's Byzantine Christians, and the party that recognized Rome's communion became the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, rooted in Syria and Lebanon. Emigration from the Levant brought Melkites to America from the late 1800s; their US parishes are gathered under the Eparchy of Newton, Massachusetts. At the Second Vatican Council their Patriarch Maximos IV became one of the most consequential voices for the Christian East, arguing positions — vernacular liturgy among them — the whole Catholic Church later adopted.

Fully Catholic doctrine in the Byzantine theological idiom of Antioch, prayed in Arabic, Greek, and English. In full communion with Rome; not an Orthodox church, though it shares its liturgy and its Antiochian ancestry with the Antiochian Orthodox.
Who decides what
A patriarchal church: the Melkite Patriarch of Antioch, seated in Damascus, and his synod govern the church in communion with the pope; the Eparchy of Newton's bishop leads the American parishes. Married men may be ordained parish priests.
What a first-time visitor would find
The Byzantine Divine Liturgy — sung, incensed, icon-filled — with Arabic chant alongside English, and the hospitality culture of the Levant in the parish hall afterward. Infants receive all three sacraments of initiation together.
What it has always cared about
Bridge-building between East and West is practically the Melkite vocation: the church has historically pressed Rome to let the East be Eastern, and pressed its Orthodox kin toward unity. Also: the sufferings of Syria and Lebanon are parish news, not foreign news.
Its gift to the wider church
A voice at Vatican II that helped the whole Catholic Church recover the East's gifts — and, in America, a standing tutorial that Arab and Christian are overlapping categories, not opposites.
Commonly confused with
With Antiochian Orthodox parishes, which share the liturgy and the Arabic heritage but are not in communion with Rome — the Melkite church is Catholic, not Orthodox. The "Greek" in the name means the Byzantine rite, not Greek ethnicity.
