Heritage
When the German Baptist Brethren divided three ways in the early 1880s, the Old German Baptist Brethren were the conservers — withdrawing in 1881 to hold the old order of plain dress, the authority of Annual Meeting, and the historic worship, two years before the progressive wing departed the other direction. They continue the Schwarzenau inheritance of 1708: trine immersion baptism, the love feast with feetwashing, nonresistance, and mutual watchfulness. Unlike horse-and-buggy old orders, they accept automobiles and much modern technology; a further division in 2009 produced a New Conference alongside the original body.

Congregations led by free-ministry elders and deacons chosen from within; Annual Meeting, gathered at Pentecost, is the binding counsel of the whole body.
What a first-time visitor would find
A visitor finds plain-dressed members, unaccompanied singing of long hymns, extended preaching by unsalaried ministers, and — at its center once a year — the love feast: examination, feetwashing, the meal, and the bread and cup shared into the evening. These churches do not run public evangelistic programs; their witness is their life.
What it has always cared about
The counsel of the body over private judgment; plainness without isolation — members farm, run businesses, and neighbor freely; and hospitality around the love feast.
Its gift to the wider church
A preserved original: the Old German Baptist Brethren keep the eighteenth-century Brethren practice nearly whole, so the wider Brethren family — and any curious Christian — can still see and taste what the 1708 movement actually did.
Commonly confused with
With the Old Order Amish, who are of different descent and use horse-drawn transport; with the Church of the Brethren, the larger and more assimilated sibling; and with the Dunkard Brethren, a later conservative withdrawal from that sibling.
Range of views inside it
The 2009 division marks the main internal range — the New Conference accepts somewhat more technology and mission activity than the original body.
