Heritage

The Presbyterian Church in America was founded in December 1973 in Birmingham, Alabama, by congregations leaving the southern Presbyterian Church in the United States, convinced that the mother church had drifted from biblical authority and was headed into the mainline merger it completed a decade later. The founders' motto set the program: faithful to the Scriptures, true to the Reformed faith, obedient to the Great Commission. In 1982 the PCA received the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod — bringing Covenant College and Covenant Theological Seminary — and it has since grown from a southern exodus into a national church of 1,873 congregations (RCMS 2020), planting aggressively in cities its founders never imagined.

Theological family

Confessional Calvinism: the inerrant Scriptures and the Westminster Confession and Catechisms subscribed by all officers; the church ordains only men as pastors and elders, holds the historic position on marriage, and contains — sometimes noisily — both strict-subscriptionist and broader evangelical readings of the shared standards.

Who decides what

Presbyterian: sessions, presbyteries and a General Assembly, with congregational property owned locally — a founding-era safeguard remembered from the departure. The Assembly meets annually and debates vigorously; the PCA polices its doctrine in public, which insiders regard as health.

What a first-time visitor would find

A visitor might find traditional Reformed worship with psalms and classic hymns, or a liturgical city church with ancient prayers and a jazz postlude, or a church plant in a rented theater — the PCA's range in style is wide while its doctrine is fixed; in every case expect serious expository preaching and a defined path to the Table.

Scripture's authority without embarrassment; robust church planting — the PCA's Mission to North America and its urban works, with Tim Keller's Redeemer Presbyterian in Manhattan the famous exemplar, reshaped American church planting; campus ministry through Reformed University Fellowship; and covenant education from Covenant College and Seminary.

Its gift to the wider church

The PCA proved confessional Calvinism could thrive in late-modern America — its city-church movement and campus ministries carried Reformed theology to educated urban generations the tradition had been losing, and its planting playbook is now borrowed across evangelicalism.

Commonly confused with

With the PC(USA) perpetually — near-identical initials, profoundly different bodies: the PCA holds inerrancy, strict Westminster subscription and male-only ordination, while the PC(USA) ordains women and LGBTQ persons within a plural confessional tradition; each would confirm the difference as stated. Also with the OPC, its older northern-born cousin — shared standards, close relations, distinct histories and temperaments.

The PCA's internal spectrum is famous: strict confessionalists and broader evangelicals, traditional and contemporary worship, differing practice on intinction, women's roles short of ordination, and cultural engagement — debated annually and openly at General Assembly.
