Unity of the Brethren
Unity of the Brethren belongs to the Pietist and Free Church family of churches.
Governance: congregational.
Unity of the Brethren reports 24 congregations in the United States (RCMS 2020 (ARDA national table), 2020).
The Czech-Texan Moravian body.
The Czech-Texan church: descendants of the Hussite Unity of the Brethren who rebuilt their ancient communion on the blackland prairie between Austin and Waco.
Heritage
Czech Protestant immigrants from Moravia and Bohemia — heirs of the Unitas Fratrum tradition suppressed in their homeland — settled central Texas from the 1850s, worshiping in farmhouse gatherings until congregations organized as the Evangelical Unity of the Czech-Moravian Brethren in North America in 1903; the body took the name Unity of the Brethren in 1959. Its congregations remain concentrated in the Czech belt of central Texas, and its Hus Encampment carries the memory of Jan Hus in its very name. RCMS 2020 counted 24 congregations.
Theological family
Protestant in the Hussite-Brethren line: Scripture as authority, Christ as head of the church, and the old Unity's irenic spirit, expressed today in a broadly mainline-evangelical Texas idiom.
Who decides what
Congregational with a synod: local congregations govern themselves and meet in a periodic synod that elects officers for the whole Unity.
What a first-time visitor would find
A visitor finds friendly small-town Protestant worship — hymns, Scripture, sermon, communion — with Czech heritage surfacing at festivals, in place-names, and among the gravestones outside.
What it has always cared about
Keeping faith and heritage together; the Hus Encampment and youth camps; and the long memory of a church that survived by patience.
Its gift to the wider church
A living American branch of the church of Jan Hus — alongside the Moravians, a second, humbler proof that the pre-Reformation reform did not die, but farms cotton country in Texas.
Commonly confused with
With the Moravian Church in America, the larger heir of the same Unitas Fratrum root, renewed through Herrnhut — the two bodies are cousins, not one; and with Czech Catholic communities of the same Texas counties.
Range of views inside it
A small body; congregations vary mainly in size and in how prominently the Czech heritage is kept.
A note from the mapmakers: Nothing here may be asserted of a specific congregation. This record is deliberately brief in proportion to the body's size and public record. Sentences drawn from it hedge as "Unity of the Brethren congregations typically…".
