Heritage

Kirby J. Hensley, a colorful Baptist-background preacher, founded the Universal Life Church at Modesto, California in 1962 and began ordaining all comers by mail, free, without question — a practice he defended through years of litigation and tax controversy. The internet multiplied the model, and several successor and competitor organizations (notably the Universal Life Church Monastery in Seattle) now ordain online; tens of millions of ordinations have been claimed across them.

Theological family

The ULC's stated doctrine is deliberately minimal: do that which is right, with every person free to determine what that means. It affirms no creed; it is a church in the legal and ministerial sense far more than the theological one, and this record does not dress it otherwise.

Who decides what

Effectively none, and by design: ordination is the relationship. The founding Modesto church and the online organizations maintain offices, but there is no ecclesiastical authority over ULC ministers, who act independently.

What a first-time visitor would find

There is no characteristic worship: a small number of congregations have existed, but the overwhelming ULC reality is individual ministers — many ordained specifically to officiate a wedding for friends or family, which most US states' recognition of ULC ordination makes possible.

What it has always cared about

Ordination without gatekeeping as a principle; the legal question it forced — what makes a minister — which American courts and legislatures have had to answer because the ULC asked it.

Its gift to the wider church

Honestly: the ULC has let millions of Americans stand at the center of a friend's wedding, and it has made every state think hard about religious liberty and the definition of clergy. That is its actual contribution, and it is not nothing.

Commonly confused with

With any congregational denomination — the confusion this record chiefly exists to prevent: a ULC minister in our data is almost never attached to a ULC congregation; and the several competing ULC organizations are confused with each other.
